Toyota Fj-cruiser Tires
Introduced in 2003, Toyota’s FJ Cruiser is a two-door SUV that recalls the Jeep-like FJ40 Land Cruiser of the 19060s. The FJ shared many mechanical parts with the Land Cruiser Prado, and is truly built for serious off-road use. The FJ Cruiser is available in Base, TRD, and TRD Offroad Package trim levels. Toyota’s development team put the FJ Cruiser through its paces in some of the most demanding offroad settings in America, including Moab, the Angeles National Forest, the Mojave Desert, and the Rubicon. The FJ Cruiser’s interior is designed with features specifically suited for off-road use, such as rubberized surfaces that are easy to hose down and oversize knobs and controls for gloved hands. The FJ Cruiser was powered by a 4.0L V6 engine with 260 horsepower and a choice of rear-wheel or four-wheel drivetrains. For model year ‘07, the FJ Cruiser was available with TRD, Trail Teams Special Edition, and ARB Edition FJ Crawler packages, beefed-up for offroading. The FJ Cruiser was discontinued in model year ‘14.
At SimpleTire, we’ve compiled some of the best Toyota FJ Cruiser tires, including all-season, all-terrain and mud-terrain tires, based on SimpleScore.
1. Pirelli Scorpion All Season Plus 3 - Best All-Season tire
For most drivers of light trucks, SUVs, and crossovers (and certainly for a 2WD FJ Cruiser), all-season tires are the best, most sensible choice all the way around. You can expect year-round traction with a quiet, forgiving ride, long wear, stable handling, and civilized road manners. Mindful of all that, our first pick would be the Pirelli Scorpion All Season Plus 3. The Scorpion All Season Plus 3 delivers on all those expectations and more – it’s designed for traction in wet, dry, or light winter conditions with a system of circumferential grooves that channel water from the tire’s contact patch to avoid hydroplaning. In addition, a network of 3D sipes with angled and lateral grooves greatly enhance all-season grip, earning it a SimpleScore rating of 9.7 for traction. With a 70,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty, tread life is also superb, thanks to robust internal construction and a durable, damage-resistant rubber formulation, bringing home a SimpleScore rating of 9.8 for longevity. Handling and cornering are all designed around a sequence-tuned shoulder block and optimized footprint for a SimpleScore rating of 9.4 for handling. Overall, the Pirelli Scorpion All Season Plus 3 gets an average SimpleScore of a very respectable 9.2.
2. Toyo Open Country A/T III - Best All-Terrain tire
If you’ve got a Toyota FJ Cruiser that’s equipped with 4WD, chances are you’re looking for an all-terrain tire that has the traction and durability you need to go off-road in sand, snow, mud, or rocks while still offering the low noise, responsive handling, good road manners, and forgiving ride you’d expect from an all-season tire. The Toyo Open Country A/T III is that kind of all-terrain tire. The Open Country A/T III is designed with a polyester casing, two steel belts, and a spiral wrap polyamide cap layer, with a cut-and-chip resistant tread compound. It’s protected by a 65,000 mile manufacturer tread life warranty, which is enough for an excellent SimpleScore of 9.6 for longevity. Grip comes from a symmetric all-terrain tread pattern with a high void ratio, easily shedding stones, mud, and debris so there’s always a clear section of tire to dig in. Its extra tread depth also means great grip and long wear. The Toyo Open Country A/T III is Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rated for severe winter service (SimpleScore of 9.7 for traction). Cornering, braking and steering response are all surprisingly competent thanks to the shoulder design, sipe pattern, and stable internal construction of the Open Country A/T III for a SimpleScore of 9.3. All in all, the Toyo Open Country A/T III is a really solid overall choice for your Toyota FJ Cruiser, with equally strong performance on pavement.
3. Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 - Best Mud-Terrain tire
Now we come to our pick for a mud-terrain tire, the Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003. The Geolandar M/T G003 is designed for the roughest and nastiest kind of mud and terrain, with Yokohama’s GEO-SHIELD construction (triple-polymer tread compound and robust internal design) making for a really durable, damage-resistant tire. Even though the Geolandar M/T G003 isn’t covered by tread life mileage warranty (many mud-terrain tires aren’t), we give it a SimpleScore of 8.1 for longevity. The reinforced sidewall and aggressive tread pattern deliver excellent control off-road and surprisingly civilized cornering and steering performance on the pavement, so we give the Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 a SimpleScore of 9.4 for handling. As you’d probably expect, grip and offroad performance are where a tire like this really excels. That tough tread compound and mud-terrain tread design with lugs that wrap onto the shoulder for lateral traction are enough to land a SimpleScore of 9.7 for traction.
4. Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV - Best Winter tire
Next up is our winter tire pick for the Toyota FJ Cruiser: the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV. Finland-based Nokian specializes in winter tires that can perform in the rigors of a Scandinavian winter, and “Hakkapeliitta” is Finnish for their 16th century cavalry troops (just in case you were curious). At SimpleTire we’ve been impressed by Nokian tires and the Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV for some time – starting with the fact that it’s pre-drilled for easy installation of studs in case of ice (check your local and state laws for legality of studded tires), and its stud pattern is designed to deliver the best traction while keeping noise low. It features a directional winter tread with a system of angled, sweeping grooves, a dense pattern of sipes and a soft-but-tough winter rubber formulation for extreme conditions, bringing in a SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. Like you’d expect, this tire gets the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rating for severe winter service. Durability is also a strong point thanks to an Aramid-reinforced sidewall, tough internal construction and an eco-friendly tread formulation that stays flexible when temperatures are well below freezing for a SimpleScore of 9.1 in longevity. Those stiffer sidewalls also have a good effect on cornering and control, earning a SimpleScore of 8.9 for handling. We should note here that the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV is also designed for low rolling resistance, saving fuel over the tire’s service life.
While these are the best Toyota FJ Cruiser tires on the market today, there are plenty of other tires to choose from. Here’s another one you might want to consider:
5. Nexen Roadian ATX - Great All-Terrain tire
We’re going to round things out with the Nexen Roadian ATX, a great value in an all-around all-terrain tire. The Roadian ATX’s rubber compound is designed to still provide traction and durability as it wears down, along with 3-ply construction, extra rigidity for load capacity, and a reinforced sidewall. Nexen covers the Roadian ATX with a 65,000 mile warranty, and we give this tire a solid 8.5 SimpleScore for longevity. The Roadian ATX is a capable performer on or off the pavement; it’s rated with the industry’s Three Peak Mountain Snowflake designation for severe winter service and features an aggressive all-terrain tread with wide zigzag grooves and robust tread blocks. Whether it’s dry, muddy, sandy, snowy, or slippery, we give the Roadian ATX a SimpleScore of 8.6 for traction. All those design factors also come together for steering response, control and cornering that are dependable and civilized on or off the road – SimpleScore of 8.7 for handling.
