Over the decades, the Pirelli brand has been synonymous with quality and performance. Where the rubber meets the road, the Scorpion WeatherActive’s features a directional tread pattern with a 3-rib design that’s rigid to resist tread squirm, angled grooves that channel away water and slush to fight hydroplaning, a zigzag central groove, and low road noise thanks to a tread pitch that’s randomized and computer tuned to cancel certain frequencies and resonances. The tread compound of the Scorpion WeatherActive is engineered to stay flexible and deliver good traction when temperatures are below freezing, but is still durable enough for long treadwear. Pirelli backs the Scorpion WeatherActive with a 60,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty. Total it all up and you get SimpleScores of 9.8 for traction, 9.2 for longevity and 9.5 for handling – all pretty admirable, if you ask us.

3. Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV - Best Winter Tire

What is a Hakkapeliitta, you might be wondering…”Hakkapeliitta” is Finnish for that country’s 16th century cavalry troops. Nokian is a Finland-based tire manufacturer (yes, same parent company as Nokia phones) that specializes in winter tires that are up to the job of getting drivers through a Scandinavian winter. Here at SimpleTire, we’ve been impressed with Nokian tires and the Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV for some time. If an ice storm turns your roads hockey rink-slick, studded tires are the only thing that can safely get you through it; the Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV is pre-drilled for easy installation of studs (check your local and state laws for legality of studded tires). Its stud pattern is placed so that it can deliver the best traction while keeping noise low. For dependable traction and control, its tread pattern is a system of angled, sweeping grooves, a dense network of sipes. Its rubber formulation is designed to stay pliable in subfreezing weather, bringing in a SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. As you’d probably expect, this tire is Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rated for severe winter service. Longevity is also a real plus with the Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV, with its Aramid-reinforced sidewall, tough internal construction and a durable tread compound (SimpleScore of 9.1 for longevity). Cornering, braking, and control all benefit from a rigid sidewall enough for a SimpleScore of 8.9 for handling. We should note here that the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 SUV is also designed for low rolling resistance, saving fuel over the tire’s service life.

5. Yokohama Geolandar X-CV - Great All-Season Tire

We’re going to round things out with the Yokohama Geolandar X-CV, an all-season tire that’s designed specifically around the performance of today’s SUVs and crossovers. The Geolandar X-CV gets a SimpleScore of 8.6 for traction, thanks to an all-season tread with four circumferential grooves, a staggered pattern of 2D and 3D sipes, and a silica-rich tread formulation that boosts wet-weather grip. We’re also impressed with the cornering, steering response, and braking properties of the Geolandar X-CV, thanks to its stable internal construction and rigid, reinforced shoulder that stands up to the forces and inertia of cornering, which lead to a SimpleScore of 9.1 for handling. Yokohama backs the Geolandar X-CV with a 50,000 mile manufacturer’s treadwear warranty, for a longevity score of 8.4 according to SimpleScore rankings. We should also mention that this is a superbly quiet tire, with a five-pitch tread pattern that’s randomized and tuned to cancel frequencies and mute road noise.
