With the Recon Grappler A/T, Nitto has developed a tire that combines offroad toughness and versatility with great road manners and civilized behavior on the pavement. The Recon Grappler A/T is designed to go above and beyond the call of duty, but doesn’t sacrifice all the things you look for in a tire, like ride comfort, low noise, good road manners and handling on the highway. Best of all, the tire is stylish and looks great on a wide range of light trucks, SUVs and crossovers.
But is this the right tire for you and your ride? Let’s take a look in this Nitto Recon Grappler A/T review.
Features and Benefits
All-terrain tires are meant to be used on- and off-road. This means they need certain features and elements to provide traction and durability., Here’s what the Recon Grappler A/T has to provide superb performance:
- Tall, prominent sidewall lugs and an aggressive tread design offer phenomenal traction when the going gets rough
- Staggered shoulder lugs provide great lateral grip and handling offroad (and also lend a distinctive, eye-catching look)
- 55,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty for LT-metric and flotation sizes, a 65,000 mile warranty for hard metric sizes
- Tread pitch and wide grooves are computer tuned to help cancel road noise for a quiet ride
- Robust tread and shoulder blocks with wide grooves and optimized sipe pattern, for wet-weather traction on the pavement and stable performance and handling off-road
- Make your statement with a choice of two distinct sidewall designs, one of which should be a perfect match for your vehicle’s esthetics
- Stone ejectors built into grooves to protect the casing from damage
- Good self-cleaning of mud and debris so there’s always a clear section of tire to dig in
- Center and shoulder grooves are molded in a zigzag pattern for enhanced rigidity
- Tread blocks are designed for reduced flex and tread squirm, for better offroad performance and high-speed stability on the highway
Pros and Cons
Like most Nitto tires, the Recon Grappler A/T features more positives than negatives.
PROS:
- Excellent balance of off-road toughness and on-highway performance
- Available in plus sizes for lifted trucks that need more ground clearance
- Long tread life warranty
- Tough and durable
CONS:
- A little loud
- A little more expensive than some competitors
- Not great in heavy snow
SimpleTire’s view on Nitto Recon Grappler A/T tires
If you’ve got a truck with all-terrain tires that are noisy, you know how tiresome the drone of those tires can be. The Nitto Recon Grappler A/T gets around that with noise levels that might not be like a Grand Touring tire, but surprisingly low, at least. More than that, though, the Recon Grappler A/T is a tire that offers serious traction on mud, sand, gravel and rock and can even be used aired-down for rock crawling.
With excellent all-terrain tires from Goodyear, Falken, Toyo and many other manufacturers, it’s a pretty crowded field when it comes to light truck tires that can bring real offroad performance. What sets the Recon Grappler A/T apart is its drivability and comfort on the highway. We set the bar pretty high for that kind of thing at SimpleTire, and we really feel that this is a tire that offers the best of those worlds.
Vehicles the Nitto Recon Grappler A/T is a good replacement tire for
All-terrain tires are typically used on Jeeps, light trucks, SUVs, and lifted crossovers. If you drive a Chevrolet Blazer, Ford F-250, GMC Terrain, Jeep Wrangler, Nissan Titan, RAM 1500, Subaru Outback, or Toyota Tundra then the Recon Grappler A/T could be a great choice for your on- and off-road adventures.

This will be the 5th set of Nitto tires that I have run. I have had them on several trucks and a jeep, and they have always been fantastic.
Great tires, have a good look too. Like that they are US made.
I have had these tires for 6 months and they are great! Very minimal road noise, they have barely worn, and they are very comfortable. They have great wet and dry traction. I have not had the chance to test them in snow or ice though. Would highly recommend.
Wet roads are a little slick but other than that no complaints.
Haven't had these long but also have no complaints noise is minima aggressive looking tires very good in rough terrain on or off road!
After owning multiple sets of M/T and R/T tires, I noticed these when they first came out and figured I'd try them out. I can't believe I'm the first person to leave anything other than a 5 star review, but I have to be honest. They are amazing tires... balanced perfectly, look great, ride great and are extremely quiet for an all terrain tire. The ONLY downfall is traction. Compared to the other brands I've owned, I've had to drive extremely carefully with these when roads are wet. I was towing my 20' travel trailer across Florida and broke traction multiple times on the highway doing 50+ mph, while accelerating around others and entering on-ramps. Needless to say it's a tad sketchy, although it'll straighten out faster than while not towing anything. While I'm not towing anything and it's raining, I feel like I need to drive as if I'm trying not to spill a full glass of water sitting on my dash. It's really that bad. Sorry Nitto, I'd love to give you a 5-star on this one but the wet traction is atrocious and I'll most likely be switching next go-around.
I read tons of reviews and all I can say is people must have had terrible tires prior to their experience with these. Almost feels like I'm driving on a gravel road most of the time. It's not at all a comfortable ride. I dread long trips now. Road noise is okay - I play music so don't hear much of it. Traction is phenomenal.
